IDEA
Email ID |
| |
Can you tell me briefly how do I get an IDEA Email ID ?
What will my email address be if I use this
service?
Mobile Mail allows you to send and receive emails from your mobile
phone. Your new IDEA email address will be mobilenumber@ideacellular.net. For
instance, if your mobile number is 9822012345 then your email address
will be
9822012345@ideacellular.net.
Though your email address is 98xxxxxxxx@ideacellular.net,
emails sent to 098xxxxxxxx@ideacellular.net and 9198xxxxxxxx@ideacellular.net will
also be delivered to your handset.
In addition to sending and receiving emails on your mobile phone,
Mobile Mail gives you standard features of web-based email services
like an online address book, a signature that can be appended to
all outgoing emails, alias etc.
Are there any restrictions as to what I
can use the email address of my mobile phone for?
No, there are no restrictions on this at all. In fact we encourage
you to give your mobilenumber@ideacellular.net email address to
all your friends and business colleagues.
However, we recommend you do not use this email address while registering
at websites or while signing up for services since it is likely
that your email address may be given out to mass mailers and spammers
from these places. Receiving spam / junk email on your mobile phone
can be most annoying. While we have implemented spam control measures
on the emails addressed to @ideacellular.net users, but it is impossible
to get rid of all spam emails.
How do I send an email from my mobile phone?
<EMAIL ADDRESS><SPACE><MESSAGE>
For example, to send an email to ram@yahoo.com all you need to
do is go to the SMS compose screen of your mobile phone and type
in the following & send it to 51111
RAM@YAHOO.COM HOW ARE YOU DOING? HOW ABOUT DINNER TONIGHT
This will send out an email to ram@yahoo.com without any subject
and the Message body HOW ARE YOU DOING? HOW ABOUT DINNER TONIGHT
Instead of the entire email address (ram@yahoo.com) you can even
use a short nickname if you have added this email address to your
address book. (We shall see how to do this later).
How can I read emails sent to my mobilenumber@ideacellular.net
address?
Whenever someone sends an email to your mobilenumber@ideacellular.net
address you will receive the following SMS
You have received an email from ram@yahoo.com. To read email content,
send READ as reply to this sms
All you need to do is to reply to the received SMS – the
contents of the reply should be only the word READ
Once you send out the reply SMS you will receive up to a maximum
of 3 SMS with the contents of the email. You will not be able to
read the contents of the emails that are beyond what fits into
3 SMS.
Important: It is imperative that
you ‘reply’ to the notification SMS you have received.
Do not compose a new message and send it to the 51111 short code.
Can I reply to the emails I receive on my
mobilenumber@ideacellular.net address?
While reading the contents of the email sent to your mobilenumber@ideacellular.net
address you can ‘reply’ to the SMS you are reading – the
contents of the SMS should be the reply you want to send out. Once
you finish composing the reply send it out and you will receive
a confirmation message telling you that the reply email was sent
out successfully.

Book |
| |
How can I create and use my address book through MOBILE MAIL?
Why do I need to create an address book?
Say you are sending emails regularly to a few email addresses.
Using the address book feature you can assign a short nickname
to each of these regularly used email addresses. The next time
you send out an email you just need to type in the short nickname & not
the long email address with difficult to type in characters like
@, _ , - etc.
For instance, you are sending frequent emails to ram@yahoo.com.
You can create a nickname, say ram for this email address by sending
the following message to 51111:
NAME NEW RAM RAM@YAHOO.COM
Once you have done this you can send emails to ram@yahoo.com by
sending the following SMS to 51111:
EMAIL RAM, HELLO, HOW ARE YOU DOING? HOW ABOUT DINNER TONIGHT?
Instead of the entire email address ram@yahoo.com you just need
to specify the nickname.
You can add up to 100 such nicknames.
Is there a way I can check / view the nicknames
I have configured?
I have configured quite a few nicknames
and now I don’t remember the nicknames what do I do?
There is a whole range of commands to view details of the nicknames
that you have configured.
NAME LIST *
This command returns a list of all nicknames you have configured
NAME LIST R*
This command returns a list of all nicknames you have configured
beginning from the letter R.
NAME LIST RAM
This command will return you the details (email address) that have
been configured for the nickname RAM. If no such nickname has been
configured it will return an appropriate error message.
NAME LIST #
This command will return you the total number of nicknames you
have configured currently.
Are there any restrictions on the type and
length of nicknames I can use?
Yes. The length of each nickname should be between 2 to 7 characters,
must begin with an alphabet and can consist of only alphabets and
digits i.e. no special characters like @, #, $, % etc. are allowed.
Can I delete a nickname I have once added
to my address book?
Of course you can. You can do it by sending the following SMS to
51111:
NAME DEL RAM
This will delete the nickname RAM from your address book.

Signature |
| |
Can you tell me more about the signature
feature of this solution?
Can I have a signature added to all my outgoing emails like I can
do with my Yahoo / Hotmail / Indiatimes / Rediff account?
The signature is a very powerful feature of this solution. As it
is it is difficult to type in words on a mobile phone and also
the number of characters available is limited to 160.
So for data like your name, designation, company which you would
need to type in for each email, the signature feature is very handy.
You can specify a default signature which will be automatically
be appended to each email you send out. You can do this by sending
the following SMS to51111:
SIGN <SIGNATURE TEXT>
For example -
SIGN SHYAM SHAH, BUSINESS EXECUTIVE, ACME ENGINEERING, PUNE
Once you have done this the signature (SHYAM SHAH, BUSINESS EXECUTIVE,
ACME ENGINEERING, PUNE) will be appended to all emails you send
out through this solution using the EMAIL command.
Can I delete my signature after having once
configured it? How?
Can I modify my signature? How?
Yes, you can delete your signature as well as modify it. To delete
the signature send the following SMS to 51111:
SIGN
This will delete the currently set signature.
SIGN <NEW SIGNATURE>
This will update the signature to the text specified. For example
if you send
SIGN SHYAM SHAH, MANAGER, ACME ENGINEERING, PUNE
The signature you had set previously will be overwritten with the
above text.

Web & POP
based Email |
| |
Does Mobile Mail enable me to access my Web based email ?
The Mobile Mail solution will enable you to read emails from your
Hotmail, Indiatimes, Rediff or Yahoo mailboxes on your mobile phone
through SMS. You can also read emails from any POP-based mailbox
too.
The beauty of the solution is that each time you want to read your
email you do not need to provide your username and password. You
just provide it once when you set up your mailboxes. From then
on, you can read your emails with some very easy-to-use SMS commands.
Can you explain in brief how to access Web
based email ?
First off, you will need to configure your mailbox using the MAIL
SET command as follows:
MAIL SET <MBOX NAME> <EMAIL ADDRESS> <PASSWORD>
This is just a one-time configuration that needs to be done. You
can configure up to 3 such mailboxes. Once this is done you can
just read your emails using the following commands.
MAIL CHECK <MBOX NAME>
Here <MBOX NAME> should be the same as that you used in the
MAIL SET command. This command will return you up to a maximum
of 3 SMS with mail headers from your mailbox. Each header will
be preceded by a serial number (1, 2, 3 and so on) which serves
as the unique identifier for that header.
MAIL READ <MAIL-NUMBER>
Here the <MAIL-NUMBER>corresponds to the serial number appearing
before the mail header. This command will return you a maximum
of up to 3 SMS with the contents of the corresponding email. If
you wish to read further contents of the email message, send the
command MAIL MORE.
Once you have read all the emails you desire send the following
command to end your session.
MAIL EXIT
Though the use of this command is not mandatory, it is recommended.
Can I read any emails using this solution?
Which email services does the Mobile Mail solution support?
Currently, you can read emails from the following web-based email
services:
Hotmail
Indiatimes
Rediffmail
Yahoo
Additionally, you can read emails from any mailbox providing POP3
access which is provided by most ISP across the globe.
How do I set up / configure a mailbox?
What is the first step in using this solution?
There are 2 commands to set up a mailbox – one is to set
up mailbox for one of the web-based email services (Hotmail, Indiatimes,
Rediffmail, Yahoo):
MAIL SET <MBOX NAME> <EMAIL ADDRESS><PASSWORD>
The second is to set up a POP-based mailbox:
MAIL MBOX <MBOX NAME><EMAIL ADDRESS><SERVER NAME> <USERNAME> <PASSWORD>
Let us look at both these commands in greater detail with the help
of an example.
Assume that you have and email address like ram@indiatimes.com,
your password is Ram123 and you want to set up a mailbox named
ind (short for Indiatimes). Send the following command to 51111:
MAIL SET IND RAM@INDIATIMES.COM Ram123
When the application receives this command it verifies the password
with the Indiatimes website and if it is valid username-password
combination, it sends a response confirming the successful set
up of the mailbox, otherwise an appropriate error message will
be returned.
Important: While the entire command is case-insensitive (it does
not matter if the letters are upper-case of lower-case), the password
is case-sensitive i.e. the password should be typed in exactly
as you would on the website.
Similarly, say you have a POP-based email account for which the
email address is ram@myisp.com, the POP-server name is pop.myisp.com
and your username and password are ram and Ram123. Send the following
command to 51111 to configure a mailbox named ISP:
MAIL MBOX ISP RAM@MYISP.COM POP.MYISP.COM RAM Ram123
When the application receives this command it verifies the password
with the server specified and if it is valid username-password
combination, it sends a response confirming the successful set
up of the mailbox, otherwise an appropriate error message will
be returned.
Important: While the entire command
is case-insensitive (it does not matter if the letters are upper-case
of lower-case), the password is case-sensitive i.e. the password
should be typed in exactly as you would on the website.
A user can configure up to a maximum of 3 mailboxes.
Are there any restrictions on the mailbox
name that I choose?
The length of the mailbox name you choose can only be between 2 & 7
characters and the name can only be alphanumeric i.e. no special
characters like -,_ , $, %, & etc. are allowed.
I am giving out my password to Idea – how
safe is my password?
I am giving out my email address to Idea – will
you share it with any other entity?
Do not worry – your passwords are absolutely safe. Your passwords
are encrypted and stored in a database which lies behind a secure
firewall. We have systems in place which ensure that your passwords
cannot be accessed either by Idea Cellular Ltd. or its content
partners. Your passwords will only be used to retrieve your emails
at your request.
You can rest assured that we will not share your email with any
other entity – be it mass mailers or even within our organisation
for promotional purposes. Your email details will only be used
to retrieve your emails when you make a request for the same.
I have configured a couple of mailboxes using the Mobile Mail solution
but I have forgotten the names that I have given to my mailbox – what
do I do now?
Can I get the details of mailboxes that
I have configured?
There are 2 commands that will assist you:
MAIL LIST
MAIL LIST <MBOX NAME>
The MAIL LIST command will give you the names of all the mailboxes
that you have configured. Here is a sample response to the MAIL
LIST command:
You are using 2 mbox of the total 3 available to you. The names
of your mailboxes are: ind, isp
You need to use the second command to get details of a specific
mailbox.
MAIL LIST IND
This will return the details of the mailbox named IND that you
have configured. Here is a sample response:
mailbox:ind, email address:ram@indiatimes.com, server name:indiatimes,
user name:ram
An appropriate error message will be returned if there is no mailbox
by the name requested by the user.
I have configured a Hotmail / Indiatimes / Rediffmail / Yahoo /
POP mailbox – now I have changed the password for this email
account at the website. Will I have to delete my configured mailbox
and configure it again with the new password?
Can I change the password of a mailbox which
has already been configured?
You can change the password of an already configured mailbox by
sending the following command to 51111:
MAIL MBOXPASS <MBOX NAME><NEW PASSWORD>
For instance, to change the password of the mailbox named IND to
Ram456 send the following command to 51111:
MAIL MBOXPASS IND Ram456
For instance, to change the password of the mailbox named IND to
Ram456 send the following command to 51111:
MAIL MBOXPASS IND Ram456
Important: The password is case-sensitive
i.e. Ram456 is not the same as RAM456.
Can I delete / remove a mailbox that I have
already configured?
Yes, you can delete a mailbox by sending the following command
to 51111:
MAIL MBOXDEL
For example:
MAIL MBOXDEL IND
I have already configured my mailbox, now
how do I actually read emails?
Reading emails is a 2-step process – first you send a request
to get all the email headers in your mailbox and then you send
in a request to read the contents of an email corresponding to
a specific header.
Let us consider an example where you already have a mailbox named
IND. As the first step send in the following request to51111:
MAIL CHECK IND
On receipt of this command the application will connect to the
mailbox and retrieve all the headers appearing on the first page
of your web-based mailbox or the first 100 headers of your POP-based
inbox. These headers will be forwarded to you in the following
format:
1/3
ind
1. Shyam Shah > Hello
2. john@work.com > General
3. Jitesh > Urgent meeting
4. JobsAhead > Job Ops
2/3
5. Sita Ram > Sorry
6. JavaNews > Latest Release
7. Shashank > Thanks
8. JobsAhead > Job Ops
3/3
9. myfamily.com > Family Tree
10. Shyam Shah > Joke
11. Suresh M > On Leave
12. HotJobs > Openings
The number of headers that can fit into the 3 SMS are sent at one
go. If you wish to view more headers, send the following command
to 51111:
MAIL NEXT
This will return up to a maximum of 3 SMS with the next set of
headers from the mailbox you are accessing.
Important: You must have sent in
a MAIL CHECK
command before this, otherwise this command will return an error.
Now once you have the gone through the headers you decide to read
the contents of email no. 3 from Jitesh above regarding an ‘Urgent
Meeting’. Send in the following command to 51111:
MAIL READ 3
You will receive up to a maximum of 3 SMS with the contents of
the email message. The response messages will be in the following
format:
1/3
FRM: jiteshs@ideacellular.com
MSG: We need to meet urgently tomorrow at 12 pm to discuss the
following: VAS logistics, Revenue Projections
2/3
New services to be launched in Q2 of 2004, Technology Roadmap.
We have to go to head office next week
3/3
to discuss these. See you then. Regards, Jitesh (End Of Mail)
The (End of Mail) at the end of a message indicates that this is
the end of the email message. However, if the actual contents of
the email are longer than what fits into 3 SMS and you want to
read further, then send the following command to 51111:
MAIL MORE
This will return a further of maximum 3 SMS with contents of the
email message that is being read currently.
Important: Before a MAIL MORE command
is sent, the you must have sent in a MAIL CHECK <MBOX NAME>and
MAIL READ <MAIL NUMBER> command. Otherwise, this command
will return an error.
